This is one sweet film... for those that love anime anyway....
seams like they filmed some of the stuff with some sort of motion capture.??

some freeking cool fights scenecs and crazy kick-ass weapons etc... those Land-Mates reminded me of "The Gyver" a bit...

see the appleseed page.

I have a real problem with motion capture as an animation technique. Real actors know to stop moving and hit marks and hold eye contact in a way that appears natural even though it isn't. Motion captured animation often seems unnatural because the actors haven't done this and the animators haven't compensated. That's why, just for example, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within didn't work, not because the technology was lacking but because the 'performances' looked quite amateurish.

I take it this is a re-make of the old anime film, or a new film all together??

This is a remake of the original Anime which came out in 1988, before that there was also a Manga series aswell. It's created by Masomune Shirow, the man behind Ghost in the Shell and Patlabor, the original is a great watch and manga is a great read also. I personally don't like the motion capture animation of this but i will still go see it because it's a great title.

This movie is pretty much the best CGI animated film available at the moment. Definately see the non-dubbed version (although I don't think the english dubbed version is available yet).

Comparing it with Final Fantasy Spirits Within isn't really fair, you'll find out why after you've watched it smile.gif

I've had the original on my shelf waiting to be watched for years but never gotten around to it. Reading this though i'll have to move it higher up my things to watch list.

Has anyone seen the new version of Appleseed yet? Im debating buying it as I cant seem to find it to rent anywhere. Ghost in the Shell was indeed the dogs bollocks but I would hate to experience a Phantom Menace moment if Appleseed is no good after having waited 8 years for another film based in Shirrows world. huh.gif
Baz
Just moving this to the Media section of the board.

I'm pretty sure there is a thread about this already somewhere. mellow.gif

If you want more stuff based in Shirrows world then you should start watching the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex series. This is a really VERY good series, based on the characters from GitS but sticking more to the original manga than the film did. Loads more characters in Section 9, the Tachikoma sentient mini tanks and some great action and storylines. There are 2 sereis so far, each 26 half hour episodes.

I cannot recommend these enough to anime and Ghost in the Shell fans.

You can get them on DVD, up to episode 20 of the first series, although I've heard the subtitling is better on the fansubs you can get, and they are up to episode 24 of the second series. I've only seen the fansubs although their legality is questionable. Basically they are tolerated by the Japanese production companies as long as the films/series aren't distributed in English.
