Depends what he's doing, I suppose. Though he doesn't seem like someone who, having gone on to better things, artistically speaking, would decline to return to the role that made his name.
Agreed. I wouldn't be surprised if he turned it down, though it would be great to see him do it. Maybe they could let Stuart Townsend finally get his shot at the role. Hehe.

I'm not sure how I feel about the Hobbit being made.. Part of me is hoping that Christopher Tolkien does put a stop to it, the other part of me wants to see what they'll be coming up with.. Still, Aragorn is NOT in the Hobbit and what the heck are they going to do in the other two movies?

It's just one other movie, which they're hoping to use as a bridge between the Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy, so they can use characters from the trilogy, such as Aragorn, who live long lives and would be around in the 60 years that separate the two stories. There's plenty of material for them to expand upon and I've great faith in Jackson, Walsh, Boyens and Del Toro.

Well that makes me feel a little better.. I'd read that they're putting out 3 - the 2nd and 3rd to be 'sort of' The Similarians but taking place btwn the Hobbit and LOTR (?).. I guess after I read that I lost some faith but I won't lose hope

Nooooooo! Really? Well, he manages an English accent better than most Americans at least. Hmm. I'm not sure how I feel about that. I mean, apart from pointing out that Bilbo's supposed to look the same age in The Hobbit as he does at the start of Fellowship, but wha-evs.

To all of you Lord of the Rings fans, reports are surfacing that the new prequel movie they are working on, The Hobbit, might have found its star.
Said to take the lead role of hobbit Bilbo Baggins is Scottish actor James McAvoy.
The J.R.R. Tolkien novel is hoping to be the next blockbuster big hit and will be directed by Guillermo del Toro.
The film is scheduled to begin filming later this year in New Zealand.
Also returning to the prequel will be Sir Ian McKellen as Gandalf.
In regards to choosing the main lead, an inside source says, “A number of names have been doing the rounds, including Daniel Radcliffe and Jack Black, but James [McAvoy] is the one the film's bosses really want. They're expected to have talks soon so hopefully it could be confirmed in the not too distant future."
As for director del Toro, he adds, “I can tell you it's down to a few names that we all agree upon. For our first choice, completely magically we all have the same name."
We’d prefer to have seen Daniel Radcliffe, but we doubt they’d pay him as much as he’d probably ask for.
What do you think about casting James????

Well jeez, if they're throwing Radcliffe into the ring then McAvoy seems like a dream choice by comparison.

Radcliffe is way too young to play Bilbo.
Come to think of it McAvoy is probably on the young side as well . . . I'd have prefered Ian Holm.

Peter Jackson looks twenty years youngr without his fat ad his specs. I know he lost weight when it was King Kong but I just seen a video from comic Con today and it is still odd.
Very excited about Set Construction. I hope they do features as in depth about that process like the4 disk extended editions of LOTR have
Here he is talking 'Hobbit'. Apparently they don't have the green light from the studio yet....

I can't see height being a factor. If they feel someone is right a role, they usually make it work. Look at Hugh Jackman as Wolverine - he's way too tall.
Atara
Jul 26 2009, 10:28 PM
I don't think a tall, lanky bloke would really translate well to being a Hobbit regardless of the actor, the look and physique doesn't suit. As much as I adore Tennant I just can't see him as Bilbo, then again it'll be hard for me to see anyone but Ian Holm as Bilbo now.
Wolverine is short in the comics but that doesn't really matter in the film, they were not trying to make Jackman appear shorter than he is, they just disregarded Wolverines comic book height and cast who they wanted. Scale does matter, however, for The Hobbit so it'd make more sense to have actors who are shorter like they did in LOTR with the Hobbits to make life a bit easier. Yeah John Rhys Davies is a beast of a man and they made it work with him as Gimli but alot more of his scenes were shot with his scale double than the other actors.
You are right tough, if they wanted a specific actor in the role they would make it work no doubt but Tennant is just a 'no' for me.

Same with me. He's physically completely wrong. Boyd, Monaghan, Astin and Wood are all short-arses in real life anyway. Ian Holm is so utterly perfect for Bilbo, I'm loathed to see anyone else play the part.
Much as I like DT, people seem to suggest him for absolutely everything lately. That's the bloody internet for you.

If not Ian Holm then I think they should cast a British relative unknown, they hardly need a big name to front the films and make it a success. If it is Maguire, i've no clue why him other than he looks like a dodgy Elijah Wood.
