Everyone talks about hiding behind the sofa while they watched Doctor Who, but did anyone actually do it? I'm inclined to doubt it; I certainly never did. So be honest - did you or didn't you?
true believer
No. But it's amazing how many people who I talk to (non fans) use the phrase to describe their viewing habits. They all seem quite sincere, too.

I actually have a memory of hiding behind the sofa to watch Dr Who in my childhood house but I can't for the life of me discern whether it's actually true or if I've made it up at some point in my past in response to hearing the phrase so often. Does that make me sound bonkers?

Not at all; apparently it is very easy to acquire false memories, and very difficult tell them apart from true ones.

I did and remember it vivdly... First time I saw Genesis of the Daleks!

Yep I would dive and stay there untill my mum changed it. I think she liked the house being so quiet with me quivering, hands over my ears in the corner and quite often left it on for a good 5 minutes!

ps I was only wee...
superfurryandy
I didn't, but I witnessed it happening round friends' houses.

I did but I hadn't even seen the show. My older sister just told me that something terrifying would be on when the music started so I did one.

Is your first Doctor Who like losing your virginity... you remember every detail?
Starscream`s Ghost
No, because our sofa was up against the wall when I was a kid, so to hide behind it would involve moving it.

I did however lock myself in the bathroom, City of Death I think it was, when the Count revealed himself to be Jaggaroth of Scaroth. (sp?)

i can remember hiding behind the sofa but i can't remember watching doctor who.

i can, though, remember going into the next room to play with my lego rather than watch the scene in superman 3 where the woman becomes a robot ( the eyes! ).

[edit] just checked imdb to make sure it was superman III and it seems i'm not the only one...

"My dad recorded it for me when it first aired on TV and when I saw the robot scene (I was only 6) I was so scared I asked him to burn the tape in the fire (which he did). "

I still have a problem watching Jaws when the head rolls out of the hole in the boat!

I have nightmares about the count as well, but that's only because upon meeting him he flirted with me (he's old, it wasn't good) and felt my arse.

Interestingly (or not) there's a debate in the Scottish Metro pages about why everyone's furniture was in the middle of their floors in the olden days - thus giving them oppurtunity to hide behind.

I was scared of the Daleks when I was younger. I like to think it's because I had an imagination.
Starscream`s Ghost
I`m more scared of the Daleks now.
Svein
Ditto... I don't know why they scared the shit out of me so much... probably the complete lack of humanity!
