The book is excellent, and you'll be missing out if you don't read it.
Penguin have just re-issued it in their classics series (along with several other HG Wells books).
Buy now and read!

I'd have to say that, IMHO, Jeff Wayne's in the definative... I can't think of War of the Worlds without thinking of "Bam bam ba.... bam bam ba..."

According to my War of the Worlds special edition CD which is in my desk drawer at work, the martians say "Ulla!"

I've got it on normal edition tape, and the martians definitely say Mulan. Perhaps they rerecorded it for the special edition.

It`s "Ullah!".
They even made a dance version of WotW, which was called "UllahdubUllah".

Also sampled on the excellent Orbital track Oolaa, from their first album.

Actually, the most depressing karaoke song ever? "Like a Rolling Stone" by Dylan. Doesn`t it ever end?
Mind you, I think it`s the law that "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" has to be sung at least once on every karaoke.

OK. I haven't sung any of them on karaoke. But I surprised my mates (so much so that one of em choked up his beer) by bursting forth with a rousing rendition of "No Nathanial*!" in the middle of a swanky restaurant. The chums couldn't ask for the bill fast enough. Mwa ah ha haaa!

Yeah it was really cool. Once we'd fled the scene of the crime my mates actually admitted that they too were closet fans of the audio War of the Worlds. It's just so good!

I used to have the Playstation game of WotW, and while the game really did blow, the FMVs used to send shivers down my spine.

Right, all this talk of the audio version has made me wanna dig out me old copy again. Scuse me folks... (doo doo de doo)
Also, back on the actual thread topic.. I heard just the other day that they're making this true-to-the book version and I hopes it wups the Tom-Cruise-starring version's ass! (It looks too much like Independence Day 2 to be truly satisfying)

Yeah, it really does look bad. But then I suspect that the Spielberg version`s not going to be much better. I wish that the "big" filmakers would get the notion that setting the film in the "last years of the 19th century" wouldn`t be a bad thing.

As a concept I reckon it has a lot of promise, I can skip the bad CGI as to me, it doesn't make a film. Quite looking forward to this now, even more than the big budget version.

I would like to see a faithful adaptation but the effects in this just look so bad I believe they would be constantly distracting . . .
Dunno, will have to wait and see I guess . . .

I'm hoping they'll be smartened up for the release but I guess it depends on financing I guess?
I can't believe a Doctor Who fan can say that they would be distracted by poor special effects

Oddly that thought ran though my head whilst I was typing the above, but the crap effects and wobbly sets in Doctor Who are nostalgia and it's great fun taking the piss out of them.
For something new it's a different matter - you simply expect higher producion values today.
