This months HOTDOG magazine's regular feature Top Ten Essentials... lists the 10 best Zombie flicks
1. Night Of The Living Dead (1968)
2. Evil Dead 2
3. Dawn Of The Dead (1978)
4. Re-Animator
5. SHAUN OF THE DEAD
6. Return Of The Living Dead
7. Braindead
8. Zombie Flesh Eaters
9. 28 Days Later
10.White Zombie
Not a bad showing, but only one place between Shaun and the extremely shite Return Of The Living Dead!!!

I can't argue with the first four, so it's thrilling that SotD placed fifth. But you're right, babe. And the fact that RotLD placed ABOVE Braindead?! For SHAME.

Ahhh the eternal is it a zombie/isn't it a zombie flick conundrum. You should see some of the posts that used to appear IMDB about that...very overheated.
The feature also suggests that Braindead was in fact the first rom-zom-com. Which pre-dates my theory that Wild Zero was.

See I support 28 days...being a zombie film but I wouldn't really qualify Evil Dead as a zombie flick. It's more of a demon possesion flick. He left off Zombi (zombie shark! Come on!) and Neon Maniacs (action, comedy, zombies, skateboarding and "chemical warfare" by the Dead Kennedys.)

I also lean toward the 28 Days Later is a zombie film camp.
Now things are going to get complicated...
Zombi is the Italian title for Dawn Of The Dead
Zombi 2 is the Italian title for Zombie Flesh Eaters (this has a shark/zombie attack)
Zombi 1 is a Dutch short film from the 90's!!!!!!!
I always thought the Neon Maniacs were just strange creatures.

Shit..you're right I should have said "Zombie (usa)" or "Zombi 2" I was talking of course about the Fluci movie.
Shit again....I didn't mean Neon Maniacs. The film I was referring to was "Zombie Death House." I apologize. I'm very tired today.

Yes it is.. How can it not be a zombie movie? There are people dying in it and coming back to life. I love 28 Days later... it's the of the few zombie movies where the story is actually different. I get sick of watching other zombie movies that are basically the same as others.

As a HUGE Evil Dead trilogy fan (Evil Dead 2 being my favorite) I have to applaud that it's #2 on the list under Night of the Living Dead.

[edit = I think Sam Rami got out a lot of the kinks from the first flick with ED2]
* I would have put Resident Evil in over 28 Days later though

People do not die in it and come back to life - they become infected with 'rage' if bitten or it gets in the bloodstream somehow - however, if they die, they stay dead.

Actually the more I think about it the more I'm turning toward the "28 Days Later is not a Zombie movie" view. The only zombie similarites really are the "you get bitten you become one" factor and that the infected look like zombies.
I guess its considered a zombie film because it is on every level except on the finer details of being a zombie (does that make sense)
Plus the director says it isn't a zombie film as well.

Okay then what is a zombie? Usually in the movies if someone is bitten by a "zombie" then they are infected with the zombie disease thing. I think that sounds a lot like what happens in 28 Days Later... So I don't see how it can't be a zombie film. Someone enlighten me on the subject. Oh wait I see.. maybe it may not be a zombie movie because since they don't actually "die" in it, they just become infected really quickly.. but still I think that it goes along very closely along the lines of being a zombie. At least 28 Days Later had a different format of zombies than most zombie movies.

I don't really care if 28 Days Later is a zombie movie or not. I don't think it should be in the top ten because I don't think it's very good.
Braindead should be higher. Love that film.

I'm just happy that zombie films are 'in' at the moment. I think the likes of Van Helsing and Underworld have made people finally shut up about vampires and werewolves (even if there are still more of those kind of flicks in development) and focus on the coolest horror sub-genre.
I agree that the Evil Dead films are more demonic possession than out-and-out 'zombie' but I guess its dead coming back to life in a sense, so it qualifies (as would The Passion of the Christ, I guess...if it were better than Braindead).
I've seen 7 out of 10 on the list, so I'm pretty happy, but I should really get round to seeing Re-Animator...

I'm sure there are more knowledgeable people than me on the subject, but my basic understanding is that a zombie is a dead person what is brought back to life - summat to do with voodoo an' that, I think.

I just saw a preview for a new zombie flick called "Undead". I think its Australian or something. Hmmm...I wonder if it will be any good or just utter shit.
I saw the preview on Apple Movie trailers by the way, for any other weirdos like myself who enjoy watching movie trailers (sometimes more than the movies themselves)..

I've seen 6 out of the 10.
28 Days Later is a zombie movie with zombie-logic flaws (albeit intentional).
I just watched Biozombie, and despite some poor makeup I thought it was a pretty cool zombie flick. Maybe it would make a top 20 list though.

Once again...
They`re not zombies, because they`re not dead. A zombie is a reanimated corpse. They are, however, infected with a man made disease which has mutated their genes. Therefore, they are mutants.
Zombies may have been the inspiration, but there were lots of other genres that inspired it.

How did I miss this thread?
Return of the Living Dead is an acquired taste I think. I love it.
Does Braindead count as a rom-zom-com? It's definitely zom-com, but I don't recall much rom. Dellamorte Dellamore is definitely rom, zom and com and predates Wild Zero but came two years after Braindead.
Also on the is-it-a-zombie-or-isn't-it argument, the word 'zombie' is derived from the word 'somnambulist' meaning sleepwalker. So running is definitely out.
