Here's one of those rubic cube things. Where does it all fit?

Front door is at the front of the house. Yes? Yes.

The kitchen is to the left of the front door. Yes? Yes.

The garden is at the back. Yes? No!

If the front door is where it is and the kitchen is where it, along with the window in the living room Ed looks out of, then the garden is at the side of the house. But it's a terrace street and there's clearly no room for that. So where is the garden?

I used to draw floor plans at college so maybe this is just a bit of a hangover from then but I couldn't help but notice this location cock-up!

I've used AUTOCAD 2005 to illustrate my thoughts about this,

Although I know someone'll correct this

The view from the living room window shows what I assume to be the kitchen (unless there's another room with an external door) extending into the garden;

Yeah, but if you look at the house from the outside (when Shaun leaves for work, when Shaun goes to the shop and when Shaun and Ed run for the car) there's no space for the garden we see as there's a house next door. When we see Shaun and Ed grapple with Mary, and later The Hulk, in the garden you can just tell that there are the next gardens on either sides of the fences. So it's meant to be at the back but where the front of the house and the garden were shot are two seperate locations. The layout of the interiors are based on the house the garden belongs to rather than the one they used for the front. Hence the screwed layout.

i get what you're saying but its late n i think it was just something they overlooked maybe?

but its a great film and edgar n simon are really good with continuity unlike a lot of other stuff around. i'm a fanatic for noticing continuity errors!

Oh come on! It's just a tiny mistake in a f***ing brilliant film, eh?

I've noticed much bigger mistakes in other movies.

But if the garden is at the back why would you see it from the front? I'm confused.

No no I wasn't having a go. I love the film to bits too, but it was just something I noticed and if I didn't mention it it would have rattled around my head for ages. This is therapy for me!

Spacegurl - That's the point I was making. If you go by the interiors then the garden is at the side of the house not the back. And if you look at the house from the front, there's no room for that as there's another house there.

It doesn't bloody matter anyway. It's just me being geeky and finally getting to use what I learnt on a built environment course at college. It's all about space and angles! huh.gif tongue.gif

The kitchen looks just abit smaller than the livingroom, and there was that sort of utility room next to the stool that shaun sleeps on, so it could all work!(?)!

Unless the kitchen doorway is next to the stairs, not accross from the living room doorway, but I seem to remember seeing the kitchen in the shot of Shaun entering the room zombie-style at the end...

Why would they use a different house? Do they mention it on the commentary?

EDIT: m0r raises a good point. there's a gap by the side of the room that projects into the garden. You can see it if you watch the Hulk scene. this could be where the kitchen door leads to, or something.
m0r1arty
That makes sense, cause it allows for next door to be RIGHT next door, so the kitchen goes back and to the left (from the stairs) but not as far back as the livingroom, giving that edge.

Surely someone here can get the lowdown on this!

they do say they used a different house for the garden shots.
maian
They probably used different houses because it would be difficult to find houses which would fit all their requirements so they would use two of them instead.

Well noticed. I thought that window was the back yard (garden, whatever), but on further review it's clearly not.

Ten nerd points.

every time i see this thread it makes me smile - the best bit on the sotd commentary for me is simon's roger mcgough impression -

theres a girl in the garden

brililant! wifey, you can have that for your com shots.

As far as I can tell, this is the layout they were thinking of...

The window Ed looks out of and the one Mary and the Hulk attack are the french windows looking out of the lounge, past the side of the kitchen and towards the shed.

The french windows at the end of the *kitchen* can be clearly seen when the Hulk makes his first appearance.

I don't recall the kitchen being to the left of the front door, but it's a long time since I've seen it...
