To coincide with the Channel 4 program about the Greatest Albums of all time, I've decided to start a thread in a similar vein.

This thread has two purposes, one is for people to argue about the albums that the program talks about, but it is also intended as a place for people to talk about what their favourite albums and say why they like them as well as to talk about what they mean to you.

My greatest album would be The Queen is Dead by The Smiths. For me, this album has pretty much everything I could want, it's got the brilliantly witty lyrics of Morrissey which also have a great deal of emotion behind them because of his delivery. It's also got a great mixture of musical styles (rockabilly, flamenco, baudeville to name a few) as well as some of the most heart-rending pop songs the 80's ever threw up. A really brilliant album.

Carole King-Tapestry is an almost perfect album. Her versions of the songs she wrote for other people are much better than the originals. Could someone tell me if this shows up on the programme and whereabouts it is? cheers biggrin.gif
maian
I'll keep you posted. So far I can't find fault with the albums that they've listed so far, ahh Nick Drake. Great songwriter.
feck off!
Never Mind the bollocks as this album , along with anything by the rommones is punk in it's simplest , rawest form. tongue.gif

WOO, Beck at number 73!

Whats your opinion on some of The Clash's stuff, in particular London Calling, where they experimented with lots of different musical styles and enfused them with the punk attitude and sound. Would you say that the more straight-forward form of punk was better? Or that the Clash weren't 'punk' as such by the time they reached this stage?
feck off!
I do love the clash but to me they have never been as punk (if you can use it to quantify this) as other hardcore punk bands, such as Discharge and my personal favirot The Exploited. However, i do think london calling is good for what it is. biggrin.gif
maian
Great answer biggrin.gif I always get annoyed that people dismiss London Calling cos it's not straight-ahead punk.

Woo, pulp!
feck off!
I want led zep, gimme some immigrant songage!

I think i mentioned it at the start, or near the start, my facourite of all time is the Queen Is Dead by The Smiths, although my favourite does tend to shift from one day to another.

I can't believe The Libertines is at 50! Up The Bracket is a classic album but the second album is crap by compariosn, it's too under-produced and they had so many good songs around at the time but they stuck shit ones like 'The Ha Ha Wall' on it.

Glad to see Doolittle and the Velvet Underground in the top 50.

Not sure if i'd say either of them were my favourite album, but their definitely up there. Lou Reed and Frank Black, absolute legends.
feck off!
Oh yea, sorry, just lazy i guess. I don't think the strokes dessreved to be in there at all.
maian
I dunno, it's a good album, maybe not as good as any of the other albums in the list but it is a good rock album
feck off!
mmmm, nah, never could like em. Like 70's and 80's rock , but tend to draw limit there. smile.gif

Damn, forgot the Ramones - Road to Ruin

I was glad to see Dolittle in the chart, it's one of my favourite albums every track is a classic.

The Stone Roses is another favourite, I loved all the bands from the Madchester/Baggy scene but the Roses rocked. I like The Smith's but I didn't really get into them until the release of the last album Strangeways Here We Come which is still my favourite Smith's Album. Ziggy Stardust is another Favourite of mine, one of those albums, like Dolittle and The Stone Roses that I keep listening to again and again.

I haven't really listened to OK Computer much The Bends is my favouirte Radiohead album.

I think I liked most of the chart to be honest (apart from ABBA obviously).

I think that both Hunky Dory and Surfa Rosa should have made to the top 20. ... or at very least the top 100!

WHAT??? Now that's very wrong. One of the best singer-sonbgwriters ever and she doesn't get a placing? Humf.
spacemonkey
It's hardly accurate, I mean they rated Ok Computer above so many better albums

I thought it was an OK list. Even artists I hate I can understand why they were in there (Dire Straits!!!) and a couple whose inclusion puzzles me (Strokes! Libertines!!!).

But ONE Bowie album! No "Back In Black" and "Lexicon of Love"!
"Ziggy Stardust", "Never Mind The Bollocks" and "Pet Sounds" in the 30's when really they are Top 10 material. And why is "Nevermind" still considered greater then "Doolittle"? "Queen Is Dead" should have been higher too.

Actually, the only way you'd ever get a decent list is if you had a cross-section of every sex, age, race and made them listen to every album ever. And I don't think that's going to happen really.

Oh, and IMHO "Never Mind The Bollocks" should have been Number 1.

Nothing at all by the Kinks? Odd.

I was trying to pick my own top ten, but could only narrow it down to 12.

The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead
Jesus And Mary Chain - Psychocandy
The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
Pixies - Surfer Rosa*
The Cure - Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me
New Order - Brotherhood
The Kinks - The Village Green Preservation Society
Throwing Muses - The Real Ramona
The Wedding Present - George Best
The The - Infected
Pavement - Slanted And Enchanted
Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine

*The Best Pixies album, trust me...

No Kinks OR Small Faces...criminal

Considering how influential they are meant to be it always surprises me when Mary Chain, The Cure, Depeche Mode and The The NEVER appear on these lists. I suppose if it was compiled my actual recording artists it might be different.
Ghost_862
Radiohead were number one? That sucks.

And Sex Machine should have been higher. Only one black artist in the top ten? That's a bit shit as well. These Channel 4 polls are always crap.
The Phantom
The show should have been called 'Favourite Albums of the people who actually bothered to vote'. You can't list in order what the greatest albums are, you can have a list of albums which are apparently great or that have re-shaped certain genres of music. what the program did do is highlight perhaps some shocking opinions of the general public.
Raven
Paul Simon's Graceland is the top one for me out of that list but REM's Automatic for the People and Alanis Morissette's Jaded Little Bitch Jagged Little Pill come near the top as well.

I'm surprised I've actually got ten of the albums on that list given how little popular music I buy! smile.gif
HellsBells
I'm going to go a bit obscure and say 'Comfort Eagle' by Cake, which I think is pretty perfect. All the rest have pretty much been said.
Omniscia
Man, though I've certainly heard a lot of those albums, I only actually own four of them: Dark Side of the Moon; Sgt. Pepper; Hounds of Love; and Hotel California.

Where the heck was, say, Bitches Brew?

The main one being that they think Radiohead are better than the Beatles.
MissingPlanet
WTF were The White Stripes doing in there. An insult to drummers everwhere.
epleboy
Some of the choices in that top 100 were diabolical, U2 in the top 10... It should be the innovators of music in the top 10, and for me U2 have changed nothing in music. Although Radiohead maybe should not have been number one I was pleased to see O.K. Computer and The Bends both in there. Anyway, these polls are always ridiculous, who really votes in them anyway?
epleboy
nice to see beck in the top 100 too biggrin.gif at 73 i think...

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhheeeeeeeeeeey!!!!
Radiohead won!!
At last i am proved right... although actually OK Computer is the 2nd best album of all time, after Amnesiac.
I have new faith in the taste of the British public, although U2 were second...

Radiohead are better than the Beatles. And I don't even like Radiohead...

I don't see much point in these polls, given how wildly different people's music tastes can be. Just because something's popular doesn't mean it's good.

My top ten albums would probably be something like

1. Emperor - Prometheus: The Discipline of Fire and Demise.
2. Opeth - Blackwater Park.
3. Tool - Ænima.
4. Blind Melon - Blind Melon.
5. Pearl Jam - Ten.
6. Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast.
7. Cradle of Filth - Damnation and a Day.
8. My Dying Bride - Songs of Darkness, Words of Light.
9. Soundgarden - Superunknown.
10. Opeth - Still Life.

The sex pistols are better than both.

I'll just hide and wait for the in depth ,tecnical arguments to flood in now....

In Australia, and they can stay there.

I, of course, think it a crime that SFA were not represented. The voting public is a cunt.

Anyway - my own choices you say?

Blue Lines - Massive Attack
Radiator - SFA
Fear Of A Black Planet - Public Enemy
Brotherhood - New Order
Hatful Of Hollow - The Smiths
Doolittle - Pixies
Lost Souls - Doves
Seamonsters - Wedding Present
Bummed - Happy Mondays

etc etc...

See, I would have picked that but I'm not sure if it counts since it's not a studio album as such. Oddly, considering how much I hated it when it was released, Strangeways is an album that I like more and more.

And I was listening to Radiator on the way to work this morning - fucking great, innit?

Bummed is definitely the best Mondays album for me...in fact probably my favourite "Madchester" album

I also left out Hatful Of Hollow because I'm sure its a compilation

Tis ubergreat!

And I take your points about Hatful of Hollow, but it is the best Smiths album.

'Bummed' was the perfect Mondays album - a step up from the ramshackleness of '24 Hour Party People...', and without the slickness of the (still very good) 'Pills, Thrills & Bellyaches'. Let's not mention 'Yes Please'.
