Full Version: Turn Off TV Week
Spaced Out Forum > Media > Media
Julie
Alright, so I know it's a bit odd posting this on a fansite for a TV program, but here's my rationale:
Everything is great in moderation. In some cases (particularly where great and thoughtful comedy such as Spaced is concerned), television is an art form the same as film, music, and books as far as I am concerned, but when a continent of children (North America) is becoming seriously obese, it's time to look at the way our society functions. And for us in North America, a hell of a lot of that functioning centres around our obsession with the boob tube.

So, for my turn off tv week, I turning it all off, tv, the internet, my xbox (shudders at the thought), I just want to know if I am still capable of living my life without them. Obviously it's not going to be permanent, but the goal is to rediscover the other things we can do in life and to do them a little more, and sit on my couch a little less.

Turn off TV week is April 25th to May 1st 2005. I encourage you all to participate.

It follows that I won't be around next week (I'll be terribly missed, I know), but I'll check up shortly thereafter.

So, anyone like to add their two cents?

they should ban cars and plant grass in the roads. i'm going for walk. i'll also not watch television that week.
Zoe
I would...but The O.C. is on...

I love telly. It asks so little yet gives so much.

Well, like they say, everything in moderation. You could try just cutting down for the week, making an exception for the OC...
Zoe
So I am allowed to watch 'The O.C.' then? Well this could be a different story...

I think the Seth/Summer reunion happens that week, so I couldn't possibly miss that.

Not watching huge amounts of telly at the minute, there doesn't seem to be much good stuff on. There are entire days in the telly page with nothing circled in my house (when I say telly page I of course mean 'Heat').

I think I might take you up on your challenge, Julie. I'm very bored with just sitting around watching TV every evening so I need a bit of a kick up the arse to do something else. I'll not be counting the computer or the internet, though, I count them as activities (as opposed to the passivity of telly watching).

Maybe I'll go for long walks or read that Datawarehousing book I keep putting off... ooh, the possibilities!

My TV is constantly off, I don't use it.

I have a TV program on my PC however...

TV schmeevee, this is the Personal Computer age!

Oddly last night was one of the first nights in a looooonngg time that I actually watched TV! I was kinda trapped on the bed by my sleeping boyfriend and didn't want to disturb him so I just flipped through the channels. Was entertained for 1/2 hour by The Office....after that it was so dismal. oh, I did catch a bit of some girl getting plastic surgery, but that made me so depressed for society.

Should I do the opposite & actually watch TV for a week? cool.gif I don't think I could stand it.

I can honestly say that Ihave watched one tv program in the last three weeks, and that was Pimp My Ride on MTV. I watched it on Tuesday with my bro whilst eating dinner, and I think I watched it once last week as well, but apart from that I haven't watched TV for absolutely ages. When I get home in the evenings, I'm either on the net, talking to my boyfriend, making or eating dinner or going for a run. Sometimes I have choir rehearsal or I go out for a drink. Same thing at the weekends. I would say the internet is the thing i couldn't live without, because I keep in contact with my boyfriend via email and also I love the weird craziness of this forum. It makes me argue about my beliefs and my views on books, films, music, plays, religion, politics, love, whilst also having threads about evil Jon Bon Jovi and pictures of people's bums. I couldn't live without it! biggrin.gif
