Must be the same people who did the live action advert for the Simpsons. My jaw dropped.

That's a whole series and the advert was promoting the series.

OK, so we've had our hopes raised before, but this looks fairly definite:

"Futurama" has a future.

Comedy Central has resurrected the former Fox animated series from "The Simpsons" creator Matt Groening and David X. Cohen. At least 13 new episodes will be produced -- the first since the series' original run from 1999-2003.

The new batch is part of a deal the cable network made with 20th Century Fox Television last year to pick up syndicated rights to the existing "Futurama" library of 72 episodes. Comedy Central also had an option to air any new episodes produced.

New and old episodes will begin airing in 2008 on Comedy Central. Actors Billy West, Katey Sagal and John DiMaggio have agreed to return as voices for "Futurama."

"We are thrilled that Matt Groening and 20th Century Fox Television have decided to produce new episodes of 'Futurama' and that Comedy Central will be the first to air them," said David Bernath, senior vice president for programming at the network.

This is good.

Matt Groening gives more details of the new DVDs:

QUOTE
We’re doing four DVD movies around ninety minutes and then we’re going to reconfigure those and they’ll be episodes on Comedy Central. The impolite way of saying it is we’re chopping them up and the polite way is to say we’re reconfiguring and we’re going to add narration and more stuff. We’re going to be doing some fun extras on the DVD show, there’s going to be "Everybody Loves Hyptno-Toad" – a whole show of it. The DVD’s are going to be self-contained packages, but the episodes will also work, we hope. That’s the goal...  It’s going to be on Comedy Central, starting at the beginning of 2008

You don't think they'd go so far as to make a 22 minute episode of just that one shot of Hypnotoad buzzing, do you? laugh.gif So watching it will be an endurance test. Like the Thermian audio track on Galaxy Quest.

Reasons to Adore Neil Gaiman, #641:

QUOTE
One of my favourite moments of Comic-Con was after I came off the Focus panel. I had my photo taken, then noticed that there was a man waiting around to talk to me, and the man in question appeared to be Matt Groening. And it was: he wanted to introduce his son to me, who was an SF reader (and we talked about Gene Wolfe). And then Matt and I had the conversation about stuff and at some point in there I mentioned casually that, no, I didn't want to cameo on the Simpsons, but as I once pointed out here, I really really really would love to be a head in a jar on Futurama.

And he said that this could be arranged.

I gloat. Hear me.

Following a conversation with Zoe and Jimmay at the Leeds Meet, I've started rewatching the series again and I was surprised to see that even though I've seen every episode dozens of times, there's always something new to find.

Earlier today, for example, I watched ''Hell Is Other Robots'' and noticed that during the Beastie Boys' performance of Intergalactic one particular shot is drawn so that everything is bent, as if it had been shot with a really wide lens aperture, in an homage to the Beastie Boys' video for Intergalactic.

I love how the show keeps throwing up things I've never noticed before.

NOTE: Some slight spoilers about the end of Bender's Big Score are included in the following video.

Sneak preview of The Beast With A Billion Backs

Even in storyboard form the second film is looking quite promising.
Raven
I got a copy of Bender's Big Score on Monday - very good, I laughed a lot!
AusChick
Yeah I loved it too!

When's the next one out??
Raven
The next one is out here in June, then another towards the end of the year (November?) and the last one in April next year.
AusChick
Yay! I can't wait.
Raven
Woot!

Coming this November:

They certainly seem to be going out of their way get Leela Cleavage on these DVD covers . . .

I've only just found out that film number 3, Bender's Game is coming out this coming Monday (in the U.K., at least, I imagine it's the same in America) so I thought it would be worthwhile mentioning this in case anyone else was as out of the loop as I appear to be.

I can't even say "Bender's Game" without laughing.

Oooh, the possibility of a 6th series? A proper one? Fox, please do this. I may start to forgive you for Firefly if you do this.

I'm pleased but far less excited than I was before the four DVDs came out.
Raven
I think this will work better - tripple length episodes aren't really Futurama's fortay, but the 20/25 minute format worked fine.

I'm pleased as punch; even though Bender's Game was very disappointing.

The Simpsons tonight was hilarious.

"Does it have examples?"

I agree completely. The four films were pretty entertaining, in my opinion, but they did feel a bit stretched over the running time. A return to 22-minutes an episode should be just the ticket.
Raven
Think of all the new material they will have to work with since the TV series was cancelled - BSG, Heroes, New Who, Lost etc, plenty to lampoon and plenty of new guest stars there! How about a Transformers spoof with Bender?!
maian
I'd prefer them to stay away from direct parodies, outside of the Anthology Of Interest-style episodes. Little references here and there would be fine, but if they were to move away from the character jokes and more high-brow science/sci-fi stuff then I think the show would suffer.
