Mmm tre.
PrincessKate
They're really good live-it should be excellent biggrin.gif
spacegurl
Yeah they are smile.gif . I'd love to see them again, actually.
PrincessKate
Me too-but I think being at just one of their gigs makes your life a li'l brighter. When did you see them?
spacegurl
Summer 2002 at wembley and they rocked! how about you?
feck off!
I thought the early stuff from bout five years ago was ok , but everything they have churned out since then has been watered down , mainstream bollocks.
I think they are playing the national bowl here in Mk though.

Manchester, same year smile.gif

You're probly right feck_off, their sound has definitely changed, but most of them are married with kids and they're adapting to the changes in their lifestyle.

Typical , why do bands make their best stuff when fooked up on illicit substances?
The chilli peppers are a case in point , under the bridge is a great heroin inspired song , but by the way was a crappy album. wacko.gif

I'd agree, if you went back a bit more than five years (i think).
feck off!
Well bout 8 years ago i got into punk through the offspring and to certain extent greenday . Twas bout 5 years ago i thought it was getting bad , but at the same time i was liking hardcore punk from the 70's and 80's more , so it cudda been me changing not them. huh.gif
spacegurl
Their songs now may not be as good as their old stuff but at least they have stuck with the same style and their unmistakable and unique Green day sound. Their stuff is still a thousand times better than a lot of the shit that passes as "music" these days.
maian
I think their stuff off of American Idiot is the best that they've done since Dookie, it's dumb, fun pop-punk but with an anger from living in America that wasn't there whne they started. The songs may have been overplayed a lot but I reckon that that does validate how good their new stuff is.
Ohio_is_for_lovers
Meh, green day are okay but people bum them way too much these days coz of American idiot, everyones even going or been to see them, i look on my msn i see yay! greenday or GREEEENNNNNDDAAAYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and people tell me im like oh yay mellow.gif thats erm...great.
Ingram
I must admit I do like my rock a little heavier with a smidge less whine, but still I used to like them quite a bit. International Superhits was pretty much always in my CD player. Although American Idiot wasn't awful - I still don't rate them THAT much though.

Woo touche , thats how i feel. American idiot was them jumping on the 'we hate bush to sell records' bandwagon.
spacegurl
Well i wouldn't particularly say it's uncommon to hate Bush and since Punk music is anti-establishment, surely it's to be expected?
Sostie
Green Day are one of them bands that have made some good records and some very average records. Don't think they've ever been awful (IMHO). American Idiot is probably the best song they have done in years. As pop/rock bands go, they're a damn sight better than a lot out there.

Yes , but they did nothing but produce one song and did nothing more. Bands like NOFX did a 'rock against bush' tour and created a website (www.punkvoter.com)to raise awearness. They put their own money into it and tried to make a real impact. I don't really hold too much against greenday , i just wish they had a clearer political message if they were creating a song titled 'American idiot'. smile.gif
PrincessKate
I thought the whole album was a 'punk opera' about the deterioration of America... or is that just me?

So what are they meant to do, mimic exactly what NOFX did? No two bands are exactly the same, even just by listening to their lyrics you can tell NOFX are more upfront and in-your-face than Green Day.

No , wasn't suggesting they mimic , just wish they would do somthing more really . I'm also slightly put out that they abandoned the Nimrod and dookie style in favour of the new album.
spacegurl
But think how long ago those albums were produced-their sound is not going to stay exactly the same. I think the new album is a testament to the fact the guys are growing older. I also think that great albums like Nimrod and Dookie are hard to come by and i think it would be a bit much to expect a band to keep exceeding themselves when they have already reached such high standards.

Yup , spose bands gotta change their style to keep alive . Ahh well. biggrin.gif

God this thread reminds me of when an aquaintance asked me about american idiot, i said it was okay, then a few days later she came up to me and was all like whoa i bought dookie, its good, wow greenday, bum, bum, bum, all this from me just saying they were okay, i felt like she thought i would think she was cool. I wasnt quite sure what to say so i was just like....erm...yeah...cool mellow.gif Hehe, i gave mvc american idiot for £2, maybe i was slightly skanked but i preffered the money.

Technically you could say Rancid did the same thing. I had a whole rant typed out, but I do not want to look like one of those "I listened to this band before they got popular" types of pricks. I've come to accept that bands are going to change, if you don't like it, no biggee...just enjoy what you do like from them. Hell, look at NOFX, when Maximum Rocknroll came out do you think anyone ever thought they would have heard them do a song like The Decline? I like Rancid, then they put out Life Won't Wait which I do not like, so I did not listen to it. Then they come out of no where with their 2000 ST release and sucked me back in. Then Indestructible came out and I was not impressed. I guess I don't have a point here, haha. Like what you like, fuck 'em if they judge ya. smile.gif
