I can't see that this has been mention any where, sorry if it has.

Has anyone heard of antony and the johnsons, particularly the track Hope theres someone. If you have heard it, what do you think?

Personally it blew me away the first time I heard it, and all I can say is beautiful.

Would love to hear everyone's thoughts.
spacegurl
Oh god- i heard this a while ago and i just think it's awful. A load of moaning and then thrashing around on a piano.
Sorry,i just found it quite tasteless, i hope it's not just me.
butterfly_with_a_bomb?
I heard it, I suppose there's probably a deep message to it.............but I still didn't like it
the_vicki_monster
I think it might be a bit like marmite
ronlogan1977
I can honestly say I've never heard of them. I can only hope they sound nothing like Hootie and his Blowfish nor Michael and the Mechanics.

They definately don't sound like either of those

they've been mentioned at the bottom of this page - by me!

i think its a fantastic album. spacegurl is right, it is just a load of moaning and thrashing on a piano, but i love it.

it includes duets with rufus wainwright and boy george so you're thinking its just campy pop, when up comes 'fistfull of love' with lou reed which builds into a great soul stomper.

i think everyone should buy it - but i reckon its the classic example of 'love it or hate it'.
sleeping_pirate
I haven't heard the song you mentioned, but I've heard Antony sing with Rufus Wainwright on Old Whore's Diet. His voice is incredible, I'd really like to hear more of his stuff.
fear_of_pop
I hated his voice on Old Whore's Diet at first! But now I have come to like it. I don't think I could listen to a whole album of him though. However nice and lovely he definitely is.
Blind I/O
Wonderful. Thanks for letting us know about em

Listening to the album right now. It's... interesting. I think it'll probably grow on me but I can't say it's blown me away so far.

is that a good oh! or bad oh! ?

i reckon its a good one. i've had to go and put it the album on now - the boy george duet is great too. and 'fistfull of love' with lou reed. oh! i really like this album.
sleeping_pirate
I heard one of his songs called The Lake, and I thought it was beautiful. I'm considering buying his album, I just hope I like it...

jus checkin

thanks for the link, tried to buy an observer in borders today but they all had the magazines missing. ( dullbuttrue )

so maybe this ought to go in the 'songs stuck in your head' thread but i seem to spend a lot of time wandering around singing "one day i'll grow up and be a beautiful woman, one day i'll grow up, be a beautiful girl..."

Really nice article, thanks for that! Can't believe he's 6 foot 4, he looks shorter in the photos I've seen.

Agh, I still don't like this and it pains me to admit it. It's exactly the sort of thing I usually get obsessed with: Man (ish) with issues? Check. Piano? Check. Histrionics? Check. Unusual voice? Big check.

And yet... I just want to give him a haircut and a pint of bitter and say "Stop singing like a woofter, there's a love."

Sigh. The universe has gone wrong.

I'm still a bit unsure whether I like Anthony and the Jetsons or not. I think the song 'Hope There's Someone' is one of the most utterly gorgeous songs I have heard in ages, although the wailing outro section does grate ever so slightly. But I have only fleetingly sampled the rest of the album so far, and I'm not yet swayed to venture a proper opinion on it. I know in my heart I want to like it, but from what I have heard of it so far, I can't quite muster up the enthusiasm to give it my full attention.

I think you're right. I had a listen to it the other day (it-won-the-mercury-it-must-be-good-I-am-an-easily-led-fool), and I can't take it. I can't. The music's all right - it's his voice. It's horrible.

Now I really like his voice, it's unusual but I think it sounds fantastic, but I had a discussion with my mate about this and he reckons the voice sounds like my drunk Morrissey impression, which I also think is fantastic, although my neighbours don't agree....
sleeping_pirate
I love his voice so much. It makes me want to cry.

I Am A Bird Now is one of the best album's I've bought this year, it's brilliant.
maian
I like his voice as well, at least what I've heard has been great. The album should be with me tomorrow so hopefully the rest of his stuff will live up to 'Hope There's Someone'
sleeping_pirate
Hope There's Someone is definitely the best song on the album, but the rest of it is beautiful too.
ronlogan1977
I know exactly what he looks like but I still havent heard one thing theyve done yet. Shame cos Im really intrigued.
sleeping_pirate
Do you download music? If you do, definitely get Hope There's Someone.

well he sounds nothing like he looks.
Sostie
Finally just listened to the album, and I like it.

Already quite liked "Hope There's Someone" because it reminds me a lot of This Mortal Coils cover of "Song To A Siren", but he rest is high standard. In places (musically) reminds me of Tom Waits and Van Morrison!

Worthey of The Mercury? Well its as surprisingly good as Seth Lakeman. It's not as entertaining as Kaiser Chiefs or Go Team. It pisses on Maximo Park. but ovearll, yeah, no complaints about him getting it.

Worthy of The Mercury?

from what i've heard, the judges were split, i think between kaisers and the go! team, so they compromised on antony.

i think its a worthy winner because its just so fresh and different. kaisers, as i believe i may have mentioned, are just an incredibly ordinary guitar band, and the go! team are a lot of fun, but nothing special. and at least antony inspires an emotional reaction one way or the other - if you hear it, you'll have an opinion on it.
