The Ivors are tomorrow, and here's the list of nominations

What are people's thoughts on either the general worth of the Ivors, or the specific nominees and who you would like to win.

I'm personally a massive Streets fan, and would have to say that the two songs nominated from the album are - without a doubt - two of my favourites from 2004.

My initial thought is that the title of this thread shouldn't have an apostrophe. But that's my pedantry.

Otherwise:

BEST SONG MUSICALLY & LYRICALLY

Should go to the Streets. Only because it shouldn't go to either Keane or a Bedingfield. And it's actually a lovely song too.

BEST CONTEMPORARY SONG

I've always thought that Doherty sounds like Harry H Corbett on this track, which amuses me. However, I think Franz Ferdinand should get it because Take Me Out sounded so unlike anything else around at the moment; it just seemed fresher.

BEST ORIGINAL MUSIC FOR TELEVISION

Dunno. Whatever. Not heard any of it so can't comment.

BEST ORIGINAL FILM SCORE

Meh. Don't care.

PRS MOST PERFORMED WORK

Gotta be Britney. It's one of her best songs methinks.

INTERNATIONAL HIT OF THE YEAR

Jeebus. None of them.

BEST SELLING UK SINGLE

Christ. Maybe the Prydz thing because I'm sure the video provided relief to lonely men all over the country. Shouldn't have been shown on kids TV though, rude!

Are they not HIS awards?

i think its funny that there are nominations for best selling single ... as though the panel will actually vote on it. I'm guessing that will be Band Aid 20 ... but what's scary is that Peter Kay/Tony Christie will probably get it (ie best selling single award) next year; unless of course the Crazy Frog has something to say about it!

It took 7 people to write the Doherty record!!!!

Take Me Out isn't a particular original sounding record (sounds like Gang Of Four or XTC to name a few) but it was fresh sounding for that time. And is just such a good record no matter. Give it to the Ferdy's

Couldn't care less about the rest

Oh I know it sounds like other stuff from "the past" which is why I qualified my statement with at the moment. But yes, give it to them for being all floppy of hair and smart of suit. When they played the song at T in the Park the crowd went mental-bouncy in a lovely magical way. "Do do do do do do do" shouted we all, in a markedly Scottish way.

7 people to write the Doherty song and only one to sing it in a way that made me think he could slip in "you diwty oweld man" at any time. wink.gif

As for the "Ivor Novello's", they would only be his awards if they all belonged to him. Being named after him is a different thing as they become the Ivor Novello Awards. If you're going to shorten it, they become the Ivor Novellos.

Additionally, Wolf Man looks like a dirty old tramp, a bit like Albert Steptoe. I wonder if Pete ever caught him sitting in a tin bath eating pickled onions?

Yes, i know, you're right. It was a genuine mistake (and one which i noticed after starting the thread), but I decided to at least TRY to defend my mistake by saying that i had shortened it to the "Ivor Novello's" on purpose ... but i can now see that I am in an undefendable position. sad.gif

What a load of crap (with the exception of the mighty 'Toxic').

I have no interest in who wins what in this shower of shit.
tigerlily
Sorry, I may also have come across as a bit militant. Initially it was really just meant to be an offhand comment.

Never mind, everyday's a schoolday.
Zoe
Would you like me to edit the title and put this all to bed?
superfurryandy
Art should not be a competition - all those who genuinely care about music rather than sales should stay away from this competition - the 'good' people such as FF & Skinner are only in there cos they sold loads of records, not cos the 'Academy' has any artistic integrity - they do themselves a disservice if they take part in any way.

Yes please, before I demand that A-Friend be sent off to some sort of grammar boot camp!

But its strange getting an award for being the most played record on the radio!

Britney seems to come out with at least one monumental single with each album - Hit Me Baby One More Time, Oops I Did It Again, Toxic - all outstanding pop records.

To quote (i believe) Shakespeare himself: "there's many a slip twixt cup and lip."

My grammar is normally quite good actually (apart from the odd misplaced apostrophe, or the odd slip between they're and their or your and you're - both of which are, i admit, very very very poor mistakes to make, although normally due to speed typing!!!!)

Anyway, back to the Ivor Novello Awards ( tongue.gif ) - i think that they are slightly more credible than the likes of the Brit Awards, they certainly aren't as "pop-tastic"

Song: These Words
Writer/s: Stephen Kipner/Andrew Frampton/Natasha Bedingfield/Wayne Wilkins
Performed By: Natasha Bedingfield
UK Publisher: EMI Music Publishing/In Genius-Songs

"These words are my own"? Not according to that writing credit, Nat love. Pfft.

I shouldn't be upset that one of the BeDINGfield spawn is on the list because there's always someone insultingly awful in things like this, but still, I could bite through crockery with my bare teeth through sheer rage right now.

i'm going to be slightly controversial here and say that i actually quite liked that song. I'm not sure why, but something about it just stuck with me. Perhaps it was because the first time i heard it was actually a live performance on TV and i just "believed" her performance ... either that or its the subliminal messages in there that made me addicted to it!? wacko.gif

I'm afraid I think the exact opposite. One of the things I object to most when it comes to the Bedingfields is the complete lack of genuine soul, passion, spark, life, reality, whatever you want to call it, behind their songs. The songs aren't actually bad as such, but they all sound like they were written to exact pop-perfect formulas and focus-group tested to fuck before being committed to tape. They bore me senseless and I don't 'believe' in them, as you say.
pots
plus the man-boy bedingfield was on 'the morning after show' ( hey, i liked it ) and he was an prick.
maian
I'd like for the Streets to win one and Franz to win the other because I love both of the albums that they put out last year and they are great pop songs. Can't say I give a shit about the rest really, i'd prefer for Band Aid to win over Eric Prydz mind

I'm not saying that i particularly like either of the them (individually or collectively) but just that one song (these words)
