Full Version: Dancey and chilled stuff

Chris
OK, I'm after some good advice...a "heads up" if you like.

I am currently totally in love with "Destroy Rock and Roll" by Mylo...absolutely love it. I am after advice as to similar stuff out there.

I love chilled stuff AND dancey stuff like: Daft Punk, Royksopp, Zero7, Mr Scruff, Aim, Nightmares on Wax, St Germain and a few others....I'm sure there are others but can't think...Oooh, Chromeo recently too.

...but yes, in short any recommendations for dance/house/chilled stuff....mainstream and/or leftfield

Chris
pots
ooooh! another recommendation thread! ok, i'll do you a copy of my electro intro cd.

dntel, sybarite, zongamin, album leaf, ian pooley, arthur russell, ulrich schnauss, the earlies, lcd soundsystem, four tet, erland oye, annie, four tet, mum and the bumblebeez.

all fairly laid back but now with added uptempo tunes. jessop and ade will be able to reccommend lots of other good stuff too.

pm me your address and i'll burn you a copy.
Ade
Well, I can't claim to have quite as diverse/obscure taste or knowledge of the chilled-out genre as Mr Pots or Mr Jessop, but my recommends would be as follows...

Of the mellow/chilled variety, I would point you toward Blue States, Sie, Fila Brazillia, Bent (Jessop's alreeady started a thread on these guys), I Monster, King of Woolworths, and early Morcheeba ('Who Can You Trust?' and 'Big Calm' - trip-hoppy, chilled funky beats). Craig Armstrong's album 'The Space Between Us' is worthy of investigation too.
The Phantom
Lemon Jelly, Hint, Gotan Project and Quantic all worth a look.
Jessopjessopjessop
Heh! What they all said!

My particular faves in this genre are:

Bent
The Egg
Ulrich Schnauss
Lemon Jelly
Koop
Chris
Yes of course...LemonJelly whom I do know and love and own their 2 albums. The rest are all pretty new to me.

The general consensus here seems to be Bent as the ones to try. I'll seek em out. I eagerly await Pots' CD in the post too.

Thank you very much kind people.

Damn yeah, I'd forgotten Quantic! They's very good.

I bought Hint's album recently. It still needs to be played, thanks for the reminder.

I highly recommend Royksopp's Melody AM as something very easy to get into and with some tunes you'll undoubtedly recognise. I've just put it on and I'd forgotten how much I love it.

Indeed, they would seem to hit the right buttons as far as chilled and dancey goes. And they are so much better than Lemon Jelly, who can be a little samey... Bent's 'Ariels' was one of my top five albums of last year, along with The Album Leaf's 'In a Safe Place' and The Egg's 'Forwards'.

And of course, I will make you a sampler if you're interested.

No worries, you must let me know what you think of Hint's Portakabin Fever album, a real grower for me.

mmmm

Lemonjelly? One good collection of 12" singles and then two albums that reguritate what went before.

Royksopp? Yes there are loads of songs that you'll recognise - pity that they are songs by other better artists.

Try Air - Moon Safari - okay they sound like Obscured By Clouds / Atom Heart Mother Pink Floyd but it's good nonetheless

Blue States - Weird - most of it sounds like the sound track to some early 1970's musical. Good though

King Of Woolworths - Yip I recommend both their albums as well
Kirstie
Try Fuzz Townshend's 'Far In' album too. It's a little bit different, and some of his music's used in Spaced too. And as for what you and everybody else have mentioned i.e. Nightmares On Wax, Mr Scruff, Royksopp and Four Tet (four of my personal favourites), not a lot else I can think of.
butterfly_with_a_bomb?
The New Gorillaz Album, very chilled unlike the first.
Sir_Robin_the_brave
The Chilled Ibiza CD's are a good introduction to this kind of music as is the Cafe Del Mar series, maybe the best of to start with. I'd second most of the above as well. Oh and anything by Ibizarre.
Chris
Ok I've had Royksopp, LemonJelly, Aim, Gorillaz and Moon Safari [well actually my wife to be owns this] for ages. But the other stuf I'm less aware of. I've bought the latest Bent CD...seems pretty cool.

Thanks people.

Looking forward to the Jessop and Pots sampler CD's

Chris - I finally finished the mix over the weekend, and burned that bad-boy onto a shiny spinning thing. I will post it tomorrow, so you should have it by the end of the week.

Ah, good news - seems you've been bitten by the Bent bug. I must recommend you also buy Programmed for Love too - much better than 'Blink', and features 'Private Road' which used to be on those Carlsberg adverts - sweet!

I've had these for a while but might give fourtet a go.

Four Tets pretty good though a little too strange for regular listening.
feck off!
Ok , sorry in advance for dragging this topic off line slightly.

I'm thinking of buying some old acid house , probably stuff from the late 80's / early 90's. (second summer of love stuff i suppose)

However , as i am normaly closed minded about music that isn't punk , i have heared very little, and know very little. I'm after quite fast stuff. (hmm, the exact opposite of the title of this thread)

Can I pick your brains for advice please?

Oh, such great daze. There weren't really any great Acid House albums by any individual artist that would really stand out (maybe perhaps S'Express or 808 State). You'd probably be better off buying one of the numerous compilations out there

I'd second Sostie's 808 State recommendation there, especially the album 'ex:el', which features several hooj house choons with an acidic flavour (Cubik, Lift, In Yer Face). Early Moby might be worth checking out - 'Go' is a house classic, but his 'UHF' incarnation is much harder and very acid.

And as Sostie also said, as acid house artist albums were not quite so common at the time, it's best to get a compilation, of which there are many. Maybe try a Ministry of Sound release.

You could try Orbital's first LP for a more melodic sound from the same era - 'Chime' is a well-known anthem. But then we're starting to cross genre-boundries and it all gets rather complicated!

I will also remind anyone interested to look at the brilliant site:
Ishkur's Guide to EDM
epleboy
i shall add boards of canada to this list, as i feel they are worth a mention. The album that first got me into 'chilled out' sort of stuff was Koop - Waltz for Koop. And as many people have already said, anything by the fantastic Bent is worth a listen. Also one of my all time favourite albums, Melody A.M by Royksopp. smile.gif
