Full Version: How good was Back?

So what do your reckon? I really enjoy it, but I find it slightly too contrived to hit the heights Spaced is capable of, so I'm voting Good.

Mee too, its still great for Spaced in general, but as far as the whole series is concerned, it isn't as good as the coming episodes. I do like Simon's issue with The Phantom Menace.

Best quote is Brian - "hello you! Go there!"

Its okay, but a bit too silly and it feels a little unfocused. Good lines as ever, ("You Lando", "..point the pink pistol at the porcelain firing range." and such) and I agree it sets up The Phantom Menace thread that runs through the series rather well, but it felt and still feels somewhat lacking. The action bits are just too messy, particularly when compared to the shoot-out in 'Gone'.

I agree that it is somewhat weird and is completely ungrounded in reality and that it isn't as good as forthcoming episodes but I still think that it is an excellent rather than a good. It really does set the series up well for the uninitiated and wastes hardly any time getting back into the swing of things for those who are already familiar. One of my favourites, though I'm not sure why.

I said excellent because I don't see how you can start a second series up after the power of the first one.

Sure it was understated, it borrowed from the Matrix, it has some Star Wars™ theme music playing in it, but it was an excellent return back down the rabbit hole which filled in the blanks for the newbies and blew off the dust for the vetrans.

When I first say it (and I'd been waiting a long time to see it) I was home again.

It's just a shame that now I'm currently homeless (metaphorically- you Lando)

RIP Banners-on-the-Hill
OK, so the epileptic pre-title freeze-frames are a bit heavy on the eyes, and the plot as a whole was a bit far-fetched, but this episode's got other things to offer - the first portrayal of Marsha after Julia Deakin "got" the character (according to her) and the recognisable disillusionment: coming home after travelling to find that you're no more self-aware or energised than before you left.

The SW 'funeral pyre', Pulp Fiction and Manhattan spoofs work well, but the problem with the Matrix stuff shows up in the fight sequence - if you're gonna spoof such stunning action sequences on a low budget then at least the humour has to balance that (as with Mike doing his Neo stuff in the 'Help' episode), otherwise it's just a cheap copy.

BTW... "You Lando!" - exactly what is Brian supposed to have done? Brian had obviously been captured, and was being held in Tim and Daisy's flat against his will. But Lando Calrissian knowingly escorted Han and chums to their doom! Talk about unfair comparison!

"Absolutely... good" perfectly sums up this episode.

Can I ask why put any choices below average, no one really would say it was crap because there on the official forum. Noted that someone will now say its crap for comedic effect but why even bother?

Just to say, Chapman, if you make up the poll choices, I worship you. They're always top notch and total genius. In fact, they make me chuckle...

Anyway, I voted good. I think it's a great beginning to a second series and re-introduces the characters very well. The classic "I'm going to point the pink pistol at the porcelain firing range." says it all really. Some of my favourite lines come from this episode. Although I agree with most of you in saying that it doesn't go to the heights that it is capable of.

Well, it's possible someone might love the series but hate an individual episode. And I think not even giving people the option to say so would make the poll look rather biased! You're quite right that the later choices are unlikely to attract many votes, though.

Thanks! I am humbled. laugh.gif I have to share the honours with Raven, though, who sometimes sets the polls himself.

I thought it was good. I liked the Manhattenish bit at the beginning, and I also liked Daisy kicking ass in the pub. But then I think there are better episodes.
Raven
Good here also as it was, err, Good smile.gif [/lamecomments] tongue.gif

It's far from being my favourite episode either but mostly because That Simm Fucker is in it and I hate him. Also the pink pistol pay off is weak.
Sean of the Dead
Good, but nowt special.
Igmeister
Good for me, but my least favorite of both series I think.
spacegurl
Good here too. Not the best episode but a good introduction to series 2.
Zoe
Excellent, if only for the Lando moment.
maian
Strange how, despite the number of people whoi have said that they don't think that this episode is anything great, the poll suggests that Excellent is winning. Odd that.
