Simon and Edgar

Simon and Edgar have agreed to come in for a webchat on Wednesday evening smile.gif Talk about the film, the soundtrack, the upcoming Spaced Box Set and script book as well as the eventual Shaun DVD.
It's going to start at about 10:45pm and go on for about half an hour, so start thinking about questions. After the chat, you'l have enough time to make a cup of tea before settling down on the sofa to watch the original Dawn of the Dead on BBC2.
Both Simon and Edgar have just recently taken part in a Q&A for Empire magazine, which the transcript can be found HERE So it should give you an idea on what questions have already been asked.

The chat will be held here: CHAT and it would be worth checking that the chat room works on your computer before the date rather than being disappointed due to a technical glitch. Any problems then please register them in Forum Feedback and we'll try to sort them out

Important Update

Having realised the sheer number of questions we are going to receive tonight tonight chat will be "moderated" as soon as Simon and Edgar arrive, so they have the chance to answer questions and will not be inundated with users' comments. As soon as they leave at the end of the session users will have the chance to have free discussion.
The upshot of this is that you will have to submit your questions in a special way, but it is (honest) very simple. You can't submit questions before we say you can, which will probably be about 10.30pm.

Logon to the chat as normal, and then where you type messages that go into the chat, type the following to submit questions.

/msg #spaced-questions YOUR QUESTION HERE

Myself and Downsy will monitor questions as submitted and will try to then ask a fair selection to Simon and Edgar. Please remember though that they won't have the time to answer everyone's questions. When Simon and Edgar aren't there you will be able to use the chat room in the normal way.

If you have any problems please post here, and we will try and help you as much as we can.
NickLee
Hi all, I have been helping Chris sort out the chat for Wednesday's "big event". I have put some new chat software on the site that is faster than the previous stuff and seems to work fine.
Usernames may not work - that is, your username on the board may not be available on IRC and you will be asked to change this. To do this type "/nick mynewname" without the quotes in the bit where you type messages.

Behaviour
I'm sure this won't be an issue but if anyone is naughty we can either kick you out for a specified time period or ban you from the chat room altogether and it will block your ISP's host address so you won't be able to get back in.

Questions
Given the number of Q&As about Shaun of the Dead e.g. on the Empire website, it would be nice if the questions were original, and you could check beforehand to see what has not yet been asked.

Can the room still be linked to from IRC?

I have always had problems with the chat here wacko.gif
NickLee
yes I believe at irc.chatster.org

Let me know how you get on.

Yep that works fine smile.gif

Unles there's another spaced chat room with the topic Pegg,Wright.Undead Grotto Of Fun wink.gif

I know this may be off topic, but a Spaced Script Book?! Wos that all about then? (have I not paying attention again? :/ wink.gif )

I believe that this news item was the first we heard of it. That was way back in 2002. Oh how young and innocent we were.

The news item also shows why you shouldn't get your hopes up of ever seeing a series three. I imagine that Shaun of the Dead came along and changed their plans.
Smart Arse Butler
I enjoyed looking at that thread purely because I'm talking about being a fluffer, which is, in fact, still my life ambition.
Theymademedoit
Well, I tried logging on to the CHAT link provided direct from the forum,
and it seemed to work for me okay using my nickname, I presume that
it should still work fine at Zero Hour.... smile.gif

What are the chances of the aforementioned chat being available for perusal afterwards?

Well at the end all you need to do is copy and paste all of it into Notepad.

And Hey presto you have your very own copy.

I'll make a copy available when it' all over

Not working for me either. I've just downloaded and installed the stuff from the website, restarted etc, but nothing happens when I click 'chat'.

Can anyone help?

PS - I'm using Netscape 7. Does this make a difference?

Sorry, haven't used it in ages, probably years. Wouldn't know where to start, now.

Thanks, Andy but I think I've got it. Downloaded the wrong version. Doy!

Bah. Still not working. Never mind, I'm having it transcribed over the phone by the other half.
sarutaro
so it's not just me being a monkey then, my other half is being less useful by being asleep on the sofa, aaah

so what's being said then? you can transcribe it here in a weird 21st century heath robinson technology working backwards kind of way. hmmmph
sarutaro
having just edited my post, is the fact that the clock assigned to this forum being still on GMT and we're all working on BST (aren't we? that would be some amazing coordination from my friends and the rest of britain against me for the past few weeks), just a rambling thought from newbie.

my hand appears at the window in the 'don't stop me now' scene BTW (yawn)
lewismoo
yay that was great fun biggrin.gif
and he answered one of my questions
even though it was one of the most meaningless ever :/

Not to worry those who missed it. I believe there will be a transcript up soon.

Oh and there's the small matter of Edgar doing a chat tomorrow night oo. wink.gif
Downsy
Woah, that was hard work to moderate !! Great fun though smile.gif

I'll keep the board posted on the Edgar chat - Should hopefully be tomorrow otherwise soon
sarutaro
sad.gif

i don't get it, was i in the wrong place? i don't have much of a clue about chat rooms but i thought the posts would be here, am i wrong? what can i do differently tomorrow?

i've forgotten to wash my work clothes and it's midnight, gah!!
Theymademedoit
Aye, good fun, nice to get one of my questions answered too! happy.gif

Hats off to Nick & Downsy - must have been a task and a half to sort that lot out! Respec'! cool.gif

Looking forward to Round Two with Edgar tomoz!

<Simon> Hello all

<NickLee> Simon, I take that IS you!

<NickLee> 4Welcome to the Spaced Out Chat with SHAUN OF THE DEAD's Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright, starting 10.45pm GMT.

<Simon> Yes, hi Nick little while no speaky

<NickLee> alright mate

<Downsy> Hello Simon smile.gif

<NickLee> right hello all we have moderated tonights chat

<NickLee> to make it bearable

<Simon> Not bad. Hello Downsy.

<NickLee> because there are so many people

<NickLee> myself and downsy will be giivng you a question at once to make life easier

<NickLee> shall I start downsy?

<Downsy> okey

<Simon> edgar is not with me. He'll be joining from elsewhere

<NickLee> Iok

<NickLee> what will his username be because hewon't be ableto speak unless i know!

<Simon> Not sure. He was doing some pub quiz tonight. I'll ring him.

<NickLee> ok ta

<NickLee> right sorry folks we'll get started just shortly

<Simon> Sorry to keep you all waiting. Edgar's a naughty, hairy child.

<Simon> Let's kick it off. Edgar will be with us shortly.

<NickLee> Simon, we have some you-specific question we can start with if you want

<NickLee> ok

<NickLee> do you know what his username will be?

<Simon> Not off hand. His ansaphone picked up.

<NickLee> ok

<NickLee> downsy do you want to find a simon themed q to start with/

<Downsy> <zenlimbo> Simon: Both Tim and Shaun are based on guys in their late 20's. As you are now the wrong side of 30 (you're not alone btw) do you plan

to continue aiming at this age group or plan for future characters to age along with you and your fanbase?

<Simon> I plan to keep being as truthful as I can. I'd never write a show about being 22 without a lot of research, so I guess I'll be writing about being

30+ next.

<Simon> Edgar's trying to get online.

<Simon> Edgar will be known as Edgar

<NickLee> ok

<Downsy> original wink.gif

<NickLee> <Baz> Simon - what is happenig with La Triviata?

<Simon> La Tirv will get going as soon as we finish up the Shaun prpmo which is taking up a lot of time at the mo.

<Simon> He's round at Alex Zane's house, the little S

<Simon> star fucker.

<Downsy> <LauraFoldsFive> Hi Simon! Have the League of Gentlemen offered you a cameo in their new film? (It would only be the polite thing to)

<Simon> I have read the script and it's great. Very funny.

<NickLee> <getonthebusray> Is there an official position regarding the release of SoTD in the USA (when, where, etc)?

<Simon> We have a distibutor standing by. US screenings have gone very well indeed. we may be going to New York next weeks for some tests. It looks very

promising.

<Downsy> <Theymademedoit> Howdy Simon! Have you considered commissioning a 'Resident Evil' style Playstation game of 'Shaun'?

<Simon> Taht would be ace. We have considered everything. Action Figures, Video Games, Sportswear. Bring it on./

<NickLee> <midge> In order to create a romzomcom, you must have studyed a few romcom's (in order to get the ratio right, of course), which are your favorite

girlie films? You Bummers! wink.gif

<Simon> I love Jerry Maguire. It had me at hello.

<Downsy> <Gannon> Would it be fair to say SotD is kinda like a modern day carry on film.. Carry On Moaning.. what with the large comedy ensemble..?

<Simon> No.

<NickLee> <JarJarGabor> The Matrix Sequels - deep, multilayered examinations of Nietzscheistic philosophy or pretentious, pseudo-intellectual chop-socky

bollocks?

<Simon> A massive screw up. Terrible in every way. They beat up their own kid.

<Downsy> <zenlimbo> Simon: Faith of Buffy ?

<Simon> Edgar is coming. He promisies to stay on longer.

<Simon> Faith. She dirty.

<NickLee> ooh, one second, downsy you got another q lined up

<NickLee> you took me by surprise

<Downsy> <Euan> The Lord of the Rings films - your cup of tea?

<Downsy> got ya back !! wink.gif

<Simon> A successful modern trilogy. There's a rare thing. Thought they were beautiful. King was amazing even if it ended 11 times.

* edgar has joined #spaced

<NickLee> <hailtothedan> I really hope SOTD does well state side, it's the kind of film thats looks like it will. Any idea what you will spend the big bucks

on biggrin.gif?

<NickLee> Welcome Edgar

<Downsy> Hello
<Simon> 'Bout time gee.

<edgar> HI! I PREFER THE PORNO MOVIES <-------- Doubt this is the Edgar

* edgar has quit IRC (Quit: The /quit of the Gecko)

<NickLee> erm, bye Edgar

<NickLee> he appears to have gone

<Simon> Bless him. He is unwell.

<NickLee> <zenlimbo> What's the best American TV of recent times ?

<Simon> Buffy. The Body. Met Anthony Stewart Head recently and acted like a fanboy.

<Downsy> <lewismoo> whats your favourite sandwich?

<Simon> Cheese and mayo lewis. no question.

<NickLee> <mightyzim> Simon, what was the most important thing you learnt from SoTD?

<Simon> Never punch Nick Frost when he's not expecting it.

<Downsy> <zenlimbo> how much creative input did you have on the romzom website ?

<Simon> we wrote the copy. The dseign was left with UIP and Edgar's brother Oscar. Oscar is a clever boy and an excellent artist.

<NickLee> <Vurt> Hi Simon, Is edgar struggling to operate his speak and spell??

<Simon> Yes he is a thick.

<Downsy> <midge> Which did you prefer working on...Guest House Paradiso Or The Parole Officer?

<Simon> He's making his way to another computer and will be with us soon.

<Simon> Ha ha ha midge. I was on GHP for 6 weeks and on The Parole Officer for an afternoon. So I would have to say GHP.

<NickLee> <SnowBlind> Simon, when you and Edgar first talked of doing a zombie film (SOTD) was it a pipe dream or did you think you could really go out and

do it.

<Simon> I guess it was naivety but we always had I hoes. Spaced had been a very smooth process and fortunately Shaun was the same. we were lucky.

<NickLee> Typo of the chat I think.

<Simon> That was supposed to be 'hopes'. We never used prostitutes.

<Downsy> <jgbreezer> so what would the porn version of SotD be called?

<Simon> Zombies Fucking

<NickLee> <Baz> Simon, will you ever do any stand up comedy again?

<Simon> Maybe baz

<Downsy> <manco> Was it a challenge getting such a genre film made and shown in the current british film industry?

<Simon> Getting any British film made is a challenge, irrespective of genre.

<NickLee> Why is that?

<NickLee> Red tape and so on?

<Simon> The Government do not support the film industry enough. No funding.

<Simon> Edgar can't get on.

<NickLee> right

<NickLee> the server may be full or something

<Downsy> sad.gif

<NickLee> lord knows

<NickLee> technology is a bastard

<Downsy> <hailtothedan> was bruce campbell/ash a big influence for 'Shaun'?

<Simon> He keeps getting page not available.

<NickLee> right it MUST be busy I don't think there's anything we can about that

<Simon> He's emailing you Downsy.

<NickLee> unfortunately this system obviously isn't designed for these numbers

<Downsy> okey, cheers

<Simon> Evil Dead generally more than Bruce alone, although Brucey is the bomb.

<NickLee> <Sixtyten> if you could choose anyone else apart from edgar to direct shaun who would i be and why?

<Simon> Quite honestly, there is noone else. Shaun without Edgar is inconceivable.

<Downsy> <zenlimbo> How much do you think the new fast zombies seen in films is down to a new generations short attention span. And no, oh look a fish jokes

!!
Downsy
<Downsy> I've mailed Edgar back

<Simon> I think it was Madonna. I think the whole fast thing is an attempt to just sex things up a little. For me it defeats the object. The charm of the

zombie is that it is somewhat ineffectual.

<NickLee> <Gannon> how have you found the reviews? overall, they have all been very good... has it relaxed you more?

<Simon> We'll stay on a while. Hell, I've seen Dawn of the Dead a few times.

<NickLee> <The404> Hi Guys. Thanks for opportunity to converse with you in some small way. I was wondering what your opinions are on the decline of Genre

Television in favour of Reality TV. It seems well scripted original programming (such as Spaced) are taking a back seat in favour to the Pop Idols and Big

Brothers of this world.

<Simon> They have been amazing. It's nice to get external validation but don't rely on it.

<Downsy> <hailtothedan> whats your favourite , most memroable moment of filming shaun of the dead?

<NickLee> sorry gave you two questions at once there!

<Downsy> and I've given you a third

<Simon> Yes. TV seems to be less and less about creativity and more about voyeurism. BBC3 is flying the flag but there's less and less room for truly

interesting programming.

<Simon> hail - the zombies outside the Winchester day was amazing. It was a real treat.

<Downsy> <snowblink> Who would you like to pencil the SoTD graphic novel adaptation?

<Simon> Edgar cannot get on the site and if he can't make it tonight, he will be back here this time tomorrow. He can't even access spaced out.

<NickLee> It appears fine he must have problems at this end

<Simon> snowblikn - I'm not that good an artist.

<Downsy> <Vurt> Simon Is this the longest you've been connected to the t'internet without looking at porn smile.gif

<NickLee> <Ursula> Would you rather die at the teeth of a Zombie or a Vampire?

<Downsy> dammit wink.gif

<NickLee> oops

<Simon> All those of you who want to watch the original Dawn, fly now my pretties.

<Simon> Vampire. A love bites better than a disembowelling.

<Simon> Vurt 3 minutes

<NickLee> your turn Downsy

<Downsy> <jen> what book are you reading at the moment?

<Simon> The Cutious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time.

<Simon> curious

<NickLee> Is it any good?

<Simon> It's excellent. All written from the perspective of an ortistic child. Gripping.

<NickLee> A lot of people havce asked now about the juxtaposition of the release of SHAUN and of DAWN - why was that, and do you consider it beneficial to

Shaun?

<Downsy> Bit of a moral question here... <snowblink> Do you think this film will encourage people to kill zombies?

<Simon> It was a surprise. We didn't know about DAWN04 until we had written the 1st draft of Shaun. Universal insisted Dawn be released first. Think it's

actually a good thing now. Didn't at first.

<Simon> Hope so snow.

<NickLee> <Laurie> Mr Simon, if you didnt do what you do now - well... what would you do??

<Simon> Edgar may be in.

<Simon> That's like a Going Live question Laurie, gawd bless ya. I'd be a full time dreamer. Reference?

<Downsy> <steven> what can we expect on the sotd dvd?

<Simon> Lots of extras. we were shooting making of footage two years before we the big cameras rolled. Lucy Davis shot a lot of behind the scenes stuff, as

did I. There will also be four separate commentaries, One by the Zombies.

<NickLee> Just a thought from lewismoo here: <lewismoo> simon i just had a cheese and mayo sandwich....what were you thinking....*throws up*

<Simon> apologies

<NickLee> now a proper question

<NickLee> <hailtothedan> favourite weapon used in Shaun of the dead?

<Simon> Incidentally. Had a long chat with Jess tonite.

* Simon has quit IRC (Quit: Leaving)

<NickLee> oops

<NickLee> well folks, it appear simon's computer has gone for a brief toilet break

<NickLee> in the meanwhile, keep submitting your questions and hopefully we will resume shortly

* Simon has joined #spaced

<Simon> Sorry got lost then.

<NickLee> ok

<Simon> what was the last q?

<NickLee> <hailtothedan> favourite weapon used in Shaun of the dead?

<Simon> The Axe, although I never actually get to use it.

<NickLee> <Victor> what is jess up to. i love her

<Simon> Jess is doing her thang. we're meeting nest week to discuss. The Big Book of Spaced and the possibiltiy of finishing the story.

<Simon> next week, not nest week

<NickLee> <The404> Simon. What would you like written on your tombstone? (That isn't a threat!)

<Simon> Edgar's getting closer.

<NickLee> that sounds so wrong.

<Simon> Here Lies David St Hubbins, and Why Not?

<NickLee> <GoodnightToMyRockAndRollEra> What will be in the big book of Spaced?

<Simon> All the scripts. Unseen photos and the lost episode. Also the beginning of an Episode when Mike gets struck by lightening and loses his moustache and

powers.

<NickLee> <dunc> shaun is a amature dj in the film isnt he? who is your favourite DJ?

<Simon> I'm gonna stay for 15 more mins guys, izzat okay?

<Simon> Tall Paul

<NickLee> <zenlimbo> Suggestions for the next Bond ?

<Simon> Kenny Baker

<NickLee> <Sixtyten> did you have any prima donna moments during filming?

<Simon> Never.

<NickLee> <BlindIO> Legalise it?

<Simon> Depends what it is...

<NickLee> <Faldor> what happended in the original episode 5 of SPACED series 2? which got replaced with the Pubbing episode?

<Simon> Edgar will be here tomorrow.

<Downsy> Edgar sends his apologies, he's having computer problems

<Simon> It was an Episode about the boys and the girls having separate nights out. It wasn't very good.

<NickLee> <Sixtyten> are you eagerly awaiting the new dr. who?

<Simon> Kind of Six. Not such a huge Who fan as Edgar or Gatiss.

<NickLee> ok, then, last few questions now for Simon before we let the poor man go to bed.

<NickLee> <CyBoRgX> Simon, Favourite british comedy?

<Simon> Probably League cYb.

<NickLee> <KnickKnack> Chris Morris; comedy god, or deranged harbinger of bad taste?

<Simon> Bit of both

<Downsy> <Drace> Scully or Buffy?

<NickLee> <Shadders> Thanks for sharing Simon!

<Simon> Bit of both

<Simon> No probs Shadders. Sorry it couldn't be mnore of a party. Edgar will be here tomorrow.

<Downsy> <snowblink> Do you think Lucas will redeem himself with episode 3?

<Simon> Doubt it snow.

<NickLee> <KnickKnack> What is it about Zombies you find so alluring?

<NickLee> ok right

<Simon> There just so damn cute.

<NickLee> I think one more question from downsy, one from myself, and if you have any comments we'll pass those on

<Simon> They're!

<Downsy> <someonethatisntSpikeMilligan> You have a week to live, what do you do?

<Simon> Jesus, it's late and my grammar is suffering

<Downsy> soz

<NickLee> <Al> Can I have your babies... I mean hat! <-- I'm assuming that isn't a question wink.gif

<Simon> Party

<Simon> You can have my baby's hat.

<NickLee> <Theymademedoit> I shall be seeing SOTD at least another 2 or 3 times, again, Thankyousomuch!!

<NickLee> <Todge> Simon I never got a question answered but you quoted Tap so you rock and keep up the stellar work

<Simon> No probs. My pleasure.

<NickLee> <Laurie> Mr Simon, i hear you're getting married - congrats. Have you any Hello/Ok-esque things in mind - any zombies invited??

<Simon> Thanks Todge

<Simon> One more

<Downsy> <Marky_D> Cheers for the 2000 AD - from the missus smile.gif

<Simon> No Hello. No glitz.

<Simon> No probs Mark

<NickLee> I think without copying and pasting every comment, everyone appreciates this opportunity

<NickLee> and I'm sorry not everyone had a chance to ask their questions

<Simon> Cool.

<NickLee> but you should see the list! We'd be here literally all century.

<NickLee> Thankyou Simon

<Simon> Last question before bed?

<NickLee> and Thankyou everyone for coming

<Downsy> Thanks Simon

<NickLee> ok -- downsy

<Downsy> hmm

<Downsy> was going to be for edgar as well

<Downsy> <midge> If you two were forced to duel each other with fruit and veg, what would be your weapon of choice, and why?

<NickLee> oh yes we shall have to ask this to Edgar tomorrow

<Simon> It would be a japanese fighting onion. Good night my friends, You changed my life. xxx

<NickLee> night Simon, thankyou.

<Downsy> night night

Apologies.

Technology and AOL and drinking and AOL and pub quizzes and AOL prevented me from joining in the fun.

I can only make amends by being online tomorrow - same time - for a whole hour.

I promise.

Edgar

P.S. I won the quiz.
